The ones that got away

These are miscellaneous photos by the students (ones they didn't pick, but that we couldn't resist) and by us.

Paying rapt attention to Teacher Nat...

These are out takes from the 'You are a Worm' assignment

And then there was the afternoon we came out of class to discover that I had a flat tire. My job was to keep smiling while Principal Weechit gave advice and Nat pumped air.

It's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's the moon!

Week 2 Is that an ANT?

Today we wanted the kids to pretend they are ants, and take pictures from the ant's p.o.v. Unfortunately, Paw Lu thought we wanted them to photograph actual ANTS so we watched in amazement as the students tried to corral ants and get them to keep still! Finally got it sorted; bonus was some great pictures of ants.

After they'd made enough photos of ants, bugs, and leaves they were asked to photograph a color:

Next came the great scavenger hunt; each team had to find 7 items and photograph them. For example: a black shoe, something round, a boy/girl who is 11 years old, the number 5... You get the idea. And so did they!

If you can't find something round, draw it! Circle by Rungsak

For the exhibition of their work, we wanted portraits of the photographers to go with the images. Each team was responsible for photographing one of the other teams. The catch was that the subject team had to like their photo. Controlled chaos ensued, but in the end everybody was satisfied ( we think...)

It's Friday, January 22; the last day of the workshop. Everyone has edited his/her work down to 4 images that we have had printed. We bring paper to mount the images on, 4 rolls of masking tape, and the hope that every picture ends up on the 3 stands provided, with a caption and the photographer's name in close proximity. Soon, tape and scissors are flying, rulers have appeared so that Thai titles can be written neatly.

There's mass confusion when it comes to mounting the photos; Nat had figured out a very orderly system with 4 photographers per board times 4 images plus 2 artist team photographs. But, as if by magic, it all works out, and we just have time to do the obligatory group photos. For some reason, Pehtang presents me with a cuddly soft teddy bear? Go figure.

Week 1 or can you say your name again please?

We struggle with the names; can't tell boys and girls names apart. Lots of giggles at our butchering of the Thai language. Paw Lu must first translate our English into simple English that she can then turn into Thai.

The first assignment was to take portraits of your partner from 3 different angles.Next was looking at photos from other MY STORY workshops, picking an image and explaining why you liked it. Lots of giggling ensued.

Wolada's turn

Nat and students reviewing the day's work

Wednesday is Scout Day in Thai schools. Boy and Girl Scout uniforms everywhere. Mr. Nipitachai, who first appeared in what we thought was a military uniform (turns out to be Ministry of Education dress) is replete in Scout Master's outfit, complete with hat. This is also the day we discovered the macro and super macro function on the cameras.

Tanitha and Wolada: what is this?

STOP MOTION:
By Thursday our recovery time from the ride to school is faster, and our water consumption is down to a mere half litre! Today is photographing movement day, most of which takes place on the cane ball court and the playground with very willing subjects.

ON THE EDGE:
A partial eclipse of the sun is happening when we arrive on Friday. Everyone is running around with little bits of video/audio tape in front of their eyes. It works! Principal Weechit and I exchange the words for 'eclipse' in English and Thai. Don't ask... it's 4 unpronounceable Thai words.

Today is edge day: putting the subject somewhere on the edge of the image. We learn the Thai word for 'shutter' is 'shuh - teh'.
